1. Handprint and footprint art craft
This is the most gorgeous keepsake DIY gift you can present to a mum/mom on Mother’s Day if you have a baby, toddler or younger child! It’s also a very special momento for a new mum or a grandparent.
Simply cover the baby or child’s hands, feet or both (at separate stages for ease and to minimise mess!) with non-toxic, washable paint and carefully place on some paper for their hand or footprint.
For best success, use these tips:
- Have a practice run first
- Use good quality but safe, non-toxic paint which is quite thick rather than runny
- For hands, place their palms down first (fingers tend to space up automatically this way)
- For feet, ensure the child is standing up
- Add the child’s name and age so this is captured and can be looked back on in future
If you want to make this into an even more unique piece of homemade art, use a printable template with cute features which the prints become part of e.g. the handprints become the flowers coming out of a flower pot, or the feet become wings on a butterfly.
Print the sheet on paper or cardstock/thin card and you can either present it as it is, or frame it for an extra special touch.
2. Mother’s Day Questionnaire or Letter
This quiz reveal is ideal for older children but you can help little ones to do this too. Write out a list of 10 things special about mum or her favourite things and have the child fill it out. Mum will love reading this!
There are also lots of ready made printable templates to download if you’re stuck for ideas or want it to look extra professional to impress her. For example, here you can find a UK ‘all about my mum’ A4 version or a US ‘ all about my mom’ version.
Or have the child write a special ‘Dear mum/mom letter’ on pretty notepaper. It can be slipped into a card or gift basket or set under her plate for breakfast. For a quick download option, use ready-to-print Mother’s Day floral paper.

3. Breakfast in bed
Make her favourite breakfast (French toast, pancakes or a fry-up etc.) and give it to her on a tray in bed! An adult will need to actually make the breakfast, of course but older children can help, and even little ones will love watching it being made and presented.
Decorate her tray (or the table if she prefers to eat there) with flowers and any gifts and cards. The little ones can even sing to her as it’s presented to feel involved!
Making her food will be one of the most appreciated ideas for homemade Mother’s Day gifts that will start the day brilliantly.
4. Make a homemade card
This is so much fun for children of different ages as they will have ranging styles and capabilities.
You can make the earlier handprint/footprint into a card or do something completely different. Younger children can do painting and drawing and she’ll love it, even if it’s a total mess.
Older children will probably have some decent art skills by now, so simply fold a piece of card, have them draw or paint something on the front and write their message inside. They could even write a joke on the front for a funny Mother’s Day card, if art isn’t their thing.
You can also purchase a printable downloadable card (great for last minute needs!) if you want something more professional, funny or elegant. Most printable cards are blank for your own message inside.
5. Coupon book
Coupon books are perfect presents which actually result in dozens of gifts for her to use in the future! They also work for her birthday or other occasion to make mom feel appreciated.
You can purchase ready-made pages of coupons to make into a coupon book and there are plenty of options and designs or specialities such as coupons from younger kids and more.
Just cut them up and staple together, or hole punch and thread a ribbon or string through to make into a coupon book. You can also present them loose in a basket or box.
6. Make a gift basket
A lot of these simple homemade Mother’s Day gifts can be packaged together and presented to her in a basket or box. See what you have around the home to make it look pretty or use any nice packaging that you received other things in.
If you have any coloured or crepe paper, or fabric, that can line the box or basket, then lay the gifts inside and cover up again and make a gift tag to attach to the side. This is a lovely way to pack up and present thoughtful Mother’s Day gifts.

7. Bake a cake
If she has a sweet tooth, bake her a cake or bunch of cupcakes! Again children will need assistance in the kitchen, or may only be observers if too young. But let them have a mix of the bowl if you can brave it, so they feel part of the fun.
Find ways to involve toddlers away from the oven, so they can be part of the Mother’s Day activities. Perhaps they can help you pour the mix in, or make a card or cupcake toppers to go with the cake.
8. Create a photo album
This is a really special Mother’s Day gift. Print off some photos of the child and make a homemade photo album or buy a simple photo album to fill up.
It’s also affordable these days to have a small photobook made up, printed professionally and posted out to you, if you have time.
Another option is to create a digital photo album online of some memorable moments that you can send her to watch on her phone anytime, or a short film combining both photos and videos with music. These are easy to create on your phone.
9. Make a bookmark
This is a really easy idea for homemade Mother’s Day gifts, even if the children are young or not very arty yet. Simply have them draw or paint on a thin piece of card to make a bookmark. Decorate it with stickers, coloured writing or sparkly materials.
You can also cut up pieces of printed photos to add to the bookmark, or write her favourite saying or song lyric. If she’s a book lover, this gift will be used often, so laminate if possible or make a few in case they get worn out!
10. Make a frame of memories
This is another thoughtful gift for Mother’s Day that will delight her. Simply take a large empty picture frame or pinboard and stick/pin lots of things she love onto it (take out any glass or plastic cover from the frame).
Ideas could include cut out or handwritten quotes, pictures of the child/children and her, dried flowers, old mementos (movie ticket or other event she attended) and anything else that will bring back memories. Just stick them on haphazardly and let her enjoy it all clustered together.
Even younger children can have fun sticking things into the frame or onto the pinboard if an adult can do the cutting up and supervise other trickier tasks. Keep sharp things like scissors and pins away from young children.
And that finishes up our list of easy ideas for homemade Mother’s Day gifts that kids can make with you!

These are some fantastic ideas! One I do (shamelessly) every year is have my kids draw or write in a journal. It started with a handprint from my oldest when he was an infant. Now they’re old enough to write simple messages. Who knows how willing they’ll be to do this when they’re teenagers, but it’s something I’ll treasure forever.
